Why One Mouth Swab Drug Test is All You Need
Oral fluid testing relies on saliva to detect substance use. You might commonly see this type of drug test referred to as a mouth or oral swab test. One of the reasons why a mouth swab makes sense for testing is because it’s easier to administer than urine or hair follicle testing. It has a variety of different uses other than pre-employment drug testing, including:
- Probation drug testing
- Live-in drug rehabilitation facilities
- Random drug testing
- Return-to-duty drug testing (after a work suspension)
- Post-accident drug testing
Employer and Employee-Friendly Saliva Drug Testing
Reliable and Efficient to Ensure Workplace Safety
Fast Sample
Collection
Oral fluid testing is easy and fast. It involves a simple cheek swab, which is much less painful than a strep throat test. This non-invasive method ensures minimal discomfort and can be performed quickly, making it ideal for on-site testing.
Clear Substance Detection
With a simple swab, a saliva drug test will effectively detect a range of substances, from powerful opiates like fentanyl and oxycodone to stimulants such as methamphetamine and cocaine. The process is simple and only takes a few seconds to complete.
Lowered Risk of Tampering
Oral fluid testing can’t be easily tampered with because it is observed directly by an administrator. Compare this to urine testing, which has more privacy considerations, making it inherently easier to adulterate test results or substitute the specimen to avoid positive results.
Immediate Window of Detection
There’s an immediate detection window associated with saliva swab tests for drugs that can show recent drug use generally within the past two days. It’s helpful for identifying current impairments that can interfere with immediate workplace safety.

Your Questions About Oral Fluid Testing Answered
What is the difference between an at-home or professional saliva drug test?
While there are nearly instant-read oral saliva tests available on the market, most employers don’t use the instant screens because they’re not included in the mandatory oral fluid guidelines from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).
Federal agencies are required to follow SAMHSA’s guidelines, and many private employers also choose to do so. By completing an oral fluid test with a provider like PROCOM, you can be sure the results don’t contain errors, and that testing is completed in a timely fashion.
How are mouth swab tests completed?
When you’re requested to take an oral fluid drug test or do it for your own personal peace of mind, a professional administrator can use a long cotton swab similar to a Q-tip to gently sweep around the inside of your mouth or cheeks. This is how we easily collect a saliva sample and cells in just a few seconds.
Remember to not eat or drink anything about ten minutes before your sample. It’s also important to note that different substances have different detection windows. So when your saliva drug test is completed on-site or sent to a lab, it will be checked for drug traces of substances left behind after your body metabolizes it.
What substances does an oral fluid drug test detect?
Oral fluid tests can detect a wide range of substances, including but not limited to:
- Marijuana
- Cocaine
- Opiates
- Amphetamines
- Methamphetamines
- Benzodiazepines
- Ketamine
- MDMA
- Methadone
- Steroids
This comprehensive detection capability ensures thorough screening.
How long does it take to get the results?
We use lab-based oral fluid testing. The turnaround time for results will be similar to urine-based testing. We strive for a following business day result. PROCOM is here for you when findings are revealed to assist with the next steps for both employers and employees.
